2014 More Than Just Weight Loss - Week Five

Hello Everyone,
 
We are heading into the home stretch and are really pushing the liver detox to a whole new level. This week your nutritional recommendations remain the same as last week and remember to consume as little flesh protein as possible while still maintaining your individual needs. 

Supplement wise the Turmero, Resvero, Ultra D and Hepato Synergy will stay the same but there are changes with the Clearvite.

Week five changes.

  3. Yesterday's meals:
    Breakfast - Clearvite with coconut milk and cream with blueberries
    Snack - Flax bread
    Lunch - Meat loaf with flax bread
    Snack - 5 sweet potato chips
    Dinner - Clearvite with coconut milk
    Snack - Plantains fried in coconut oil with cinnamon and a small amount of coconut ice cream
    Snack - Flax cereal with coconut cream
    *Never really felt like dinner, so I simply had snacks through the afternoon into evening

    1. The good news this morning was that I am down to 193.8 and only 18 away from my goal weight of 192. I started at 204.3 pounds.

  4. This was asked by another member of the group.

    So... I've done the cross-reactive testing. According to it, coffee, soy, sesame, oats, rice, and a bunch of other things are okay for my body.

    Once this is over, can I assume that the are okay, or should I still reintroduce them slowly?

    Also, I couldn't quite make out what the 3 parts of the iron test would be, could you please write those out for me here.

    1. If you have done the cross reactive test and you have this defined, it is fine to add the "OK" foods back in at the end of the program.

      The three areas to review with iron is a total iron level, (TIBC) total iron binding capacity and ferritin.

  5. I'm getting serious about my coconut! Buying baby coconuts and blending the meat and water in the VitaMix. Can't beat the fresh taste and no guar gum, added water and processing.

  8. OK, I have a question. We were at a friends's house for dinner last night, and they fixed chili. I know I shouldn't have eaten it, but I didn't want to be rude. Anyway, within a half an hour of eating it, I got violently ill! My stomach hurt so bad that I had to go home and lay down. It still hurts this morning. Anybody got any ideas on what that could be? I'm thinking the tomatoes hit me hard, I also can't eat oranges (discovered that early in the program), and I can't take anything with aspirin in it. Do you think I might have a salicylates allergy? Any ideas? Thanks.

    2. Hi Dara,
      The problem is you don't know what went into the chili. If your friend used any kind of commercial seasoning packet in the chili, that could contain all kinds of gluten, soy, corn, MSG, and chemicals. If not, then it could be any food you suspect.

      You may be sensitive to salicylates; have you noticed a reaction to processed foods or supplements containing these?

    3. At least I assume that if you felt rude not eating the chili, you probably would have felt rude asking for the ingredient list! It can feel awkward to ask, but it's necessary when we know we have a bad reaction to gluten or any other food.

    4. Dara, I know how you feel about not being rude. Whenever I go to a social event, I always ask what will be served in advance. If it's a friend, I let them know about my dietary restrictions. They are always happy to accommodate. Sometimes I bring my own food if they've planned something special that I don't eat. When I explain what's going on with me, they are always very understanding. My friends know to leave the cheese out of the salad and on the side, for instance, as a general rule when I'm coming.

      Last night, we went to a pot luck. I didn't have time during the day to prepare something homemade, so we picked up an organic roasted chicken from Whole Foods. It was amazing the subtle feeling I felt when I ate it. It's so interesting how even though the ingredients list states there's nothing I'm sensitive to in store-bought/prepared foods, there is a big difference from home prepared. There's also a favorable difference in buying from local farmers' markets as opposed to Whole Foods and other 'healthy' food stores.

      Btw, for chili lovers, Simply Organic makes a pretty safe chili seasoning mix - no gluten, made with brown rice, has a little cane sugar.

    5. Jaelin, you're right that the prepared food even "healthy" places like Whole Foods are not nearly as wholesome as what we make at home. Try finding a prepared food at the food bar at WF that wasn't made with canola oil! I only found one (sweet potatoes).

    7. Thanks for your replies ladies. This gluten free stuff is very new to me, and I know that I'm sensitive to it. I bet you are right, there was probably some hidden gluten in there somewhere, and I am going to have to just get used to this new diet, and fess up to my friends and family that I just can't have it.

  9. Hey, Lynda, I'm having oily stools. Is something happening with my liver/gall bladder? Maybe too much coconut? (About 1-2 cups of the meat and water from a fresh coconut blended daily.)

    What's the longest you've know someone to experience food sensitivity &/or die off reactions after abstaining from sugar, high carbs and x-reactive foods?

  10. Die-off will typically last no more than a week. Die-off would have happened when you initially started the program and perhaps flared up when you started on the Clearvite, but it’s not likely that die-off is getting worse now that you’ve been eating this way for a few weeks.

    When adding a new food, if your symptoms get worse, this is a sign that your body is saying, "Wait, something isn’t right about this.” The truth is you could have introduced too much coconut too fast and need to slow down a bit or maybe your body isn’t ready to handle it yet and you should try again in a few weeks.

    1. I've been on my 'good diet' since the week before the program started. My list of tested x-reactive foods is pretty long and since I was tested last year, I have discovered more foods that I am sensitive to that were not tested for. The only things I eat (when eating properly) are meat and low-glycemic vegetables + coconut, avocado, olive oil, occasionally olives and rarely - 2 times in 5 weeks - berries. I also drink the Good Earth Sweet& Spicy tea. I eliminated bacon for a week, which didn't give me any relief.

      As far as the coconut, I started off using a tablespoonful or 2 a day of the packaged variety. I will decrease the amount of the real stuff and see how that goes for the 'bathroom issue'.

      To tell you the truth, every time I do this cleanse, I feel worse and never break through to feeling better.

      I'm very sensitive to sugar and wonder about the stevia and luo han guo in the supplements.

      I've thought of doing a bone broth fast for 3-5 days, but Glen thought that would be too hard on me. I really don't know how it would be harder than living through these symptoms. They're very intense.

      I have a friend who is working with a physician and has gone through the GAPS diet. She says her doc advised her to do GAPS to heal the gut before embarking on a significant cleanse. What do you think about that?

    2. Coconut oil is a potent anti-microbial in itself, so it's possible adding a significant amount of additional coconut to your diet could be a bit too much for your system on top of the Clearvite.

      A broth fast would be too hard especially if blood sugar control is an issue for you. Adding bone broth to your current diet would certainly help in healing your gut.

      I agree that going through a gut healing diet, as well as balancing the adrenal glands, would improve your success with the cleanse.

    3. Jaelin, I don't remember if we discussed this in any of the previous weeks - have you tried cutting out the higher reactivity vegetables from your diet? Since you have a known long list of food intolerances, this may make the difference.

    4. Lynda, thanks for the feedback.

      The bathroom issue is balancing out, so you were probably right about the coconut being a bit much too soon. It's ok now.

      I drink 1 to 3 cups of bone broth daily. I have been on the adrenal protocol for a long time. I've historically gotten a little lazy/frustrated with the pregnenolone and DHEA drops during periods, but I've been taking them religiously for several months now. The drops upsets my stomach in the mornings. I know they have to be taken at least 15 minutes before or after food. I usually don't wake up until 8ish, so have to take them right away to get them in during the correct time window.

      I sleep until 8 for a few reasons: 1) I have read that adrenal healing takes place between 7-9am, so sleep until 9 if you can (and I can). 2) I can't seem to make myself go to bed by 10. I know that is the best for me. I'm very aware of the ayurvedic health recommendation as well as good for adrenals. It's tricky, the adrenal imbalance doesn't like me to go to sleep by 10, but the adrenal imbalance needs me to. 3) I toss and turn all night and am always very tired in the mornings.

      Glen and I have discussed getting a LIGHT alarm clock so I can get up closer to sunrise. I've got that on my 'want' list for when budget allows.

      You told us in your story that you became a health practitioner due to your own health challenges. My understanding from your story was because of acne. Have you had adrenal challenges? If so, can you share your experience with symptoms and how you healed?

      The only higher reactivity vegetable I consume is cucumber a few times a week in a green veggie juice. I gave that up for a week as well and it didn't make a difference.

      Glen and I are also working on the possibility of me not wanting to heal on a subconscious level. I've been tapping and doing lots of 'I Am' affirmations.

      I'm glad to hear that cutting back on the coconut has helped. Great job on getting good adrenal sleep between 7am and 9am. This is really helpful for healing.

      I, like almost everyone with health challenges, have adrenal challenges as well. I'm sure that adrenal dysfunction was key in the development of my cystic acne. If only I'd known back then that holistic practitioners existed and what they do! My overall energy level was affected and my sleep cycles were off, too. More recently, as I used the adrenal protocol for a Stage 2, I didn't notice any changes after the first month. At that time, I did a stool test kit and discovered a gut infection. Once this was cleared up with supplementation, the adrenal program was far more effective. I soon found myself waking up automatically before 6:30 when I'd been a lifelong night owl. Getting myself to bed by 10:30pm is still a challenge, but I feel tremendously better when I manage to do so. I'm still in the healing phase, and have just ordered a followup adrenal test to check my progress. So many factors determine our rate of healing that it is a very individual experience.

      Yes, our minds have the power to harm us and the power to heal us. Many of us need to unlearn some destructive thinking habits and beliefs to fully benefit from the other lifestyle changes we make.

  11. I have gained 2 lbs since starting the 3 shakes a day on weds, and wondering if I am using too much coconut milk. I am using one can of full fat,(not light) coconut milk split into 3 shakes. I also add 1/2 of a banana to help make it creamy. Is anyone else having this problem?
    Also... what are some of your favorite shake recipes?? I need some variety.. thanks

    1. Hi Carolyn,
      I think you're okay with the coconut milk. Instead, I suspect the problem may be the banana. Bananas are actually on the Avoidance Foods List because of their high sugar content. High glycemic foods will raise insulin and cause the sugar to be stored as fat. I'd recommend replacing the banana with avocado for creaminess. Since the avocado is a good source of fat in itself, you can reduce the coconut milk or replace it with water.

    2. I find the ClearVite with coconut milk very creamy and delicious on its own. Try it for a day, Carolyn, and see. I'm feeling a little heavy with all the coconut so I'm doing one shake a day with water only. I have eliminated one meal of meat by consuming so much coconut fat. My typical breakfast is a cup of bone broth then a ClearVite/fresh coconut shake.

  12. Thanks Jaelin for posting your concerns/frustrations here because it helps the rest of this community. It's especially important to share how different we are and how we handle each phase of this cleanse differently.

    The eating part of this program isn't much different from the way I eat regularly (except I miss nuts and some seeds). But, I've not really lost weight either. I'm feeling more "regular" in this phase of the program, but still not dropping pounds.

    There are likely other contributing factors as Glen pointed out in the last webinar. Long-term toxicity, adrenal function, barrier system breakdown, chronic infections, etc.

    Maybe some of us need a More Than Just Weight Loss - Part Deaux program ;-)

    1. You're right, Sue. Each of us enters the program with different levels of toxicity, adrenal function, and GI health. This will definitely affect your results on the program, especially if this is your first time. Difficulty on this program is a sign that, if you haven't done so already, it would be beneficial to have your adrenal function tested, and discover if your gut also needs additional support to heal. Then the next time you do the program it will produce better results.

      I miss nuts and seeds, too. I suspect I may be reactive to almonds, though. I'll see when I get to reintroduce them.

    2. Thanks for your support, Sue. It is weird. I dropped 5 pounds the week before the cleanse. Once I started the cleanse, the weight drop was substantially less. I'm not going to hit my goal weight (which was optimistically set at 20 pounds after that initial 5 pounds during the pre-week), but happy for the 8 total pounds so far. At this point, I would trade feeling better for the weight loss. I'm committed to sticking with this for the long haul.

      My husband and I went through some pretty traumatic stuff the past few years (not he and I, but he and I together) and I know that the physical and emotional effects of that, and a very stressful career (thank goodness I don't do anymore), isn't going to heal overnight

      ...although it could. :)

    I was part of the program last year (as were my parents). This year I decided to do it again. Unfortunately, I am weeks behind everyone - there were some problems getting the supplements to me (I live in Canada and I live wayyyyy up north!). Anyway, the good news is that I just started week 2 today! I have had an awful week emotionally, but aside from that I feel good! I just wanted to say hi to everyone and thank you for sharing some awesome recipes! I just read through the week 1 blog and I can only imagine that feels so long ago to you all.
