Vitamin D3 Liquid

Support for bone, breast, prostate, cardiovascular, colon and immune health in an easy to use liquid form

Vitamin D promotes intestinal calcium and phosphorous absorption and reduces urinary calcium loss, essential mechanisms for maintaining proper calcium levels in the body and for healthy bone composition. Vitamin D supports cardiovascular function in some individuals, which may be attributed to its effect on calcium metabolism or possibly by helping to maintain healthy plasma renin function. A role for vitamin D in supporting colon health by promoting healthy cellular function has also been suggested. Furthermore, vitamin D is believed to provide general cellular support potential, including for breast and prostate tissue, in part by helping to maintain healthy angiogenesis balance, supporting immune cell activity, and maintaining healthy cell metabolism. Vitamin D¹s role in immune health has long been established; vitamin D receptors are found on a number of immune cells, including lymphocytes and macrophages, supporting healthy immune cell activation.

What do you Think About Vitamin D?

by Glen Depke

There is quite a bit on the internet about vitamin D, so what do you think about vitamin D?

Well, here is my take on this important nutrient.

First of all, there is a question as to whether or not vitamin D is a vitamin at all. Some claim it is a vitamin, some claim it is a vitamin with hormone type properties, while some believe it is actually a hormone. Regardless of what it is there is one agreement, we need it in adequate amounts.

First of all, what is the benefit of maintaining proper vitamin D levels? Here is a list of the benefits of proper vitamin D levels.

• Delay the onset of aging
• Improves hearing
• Assists in cancer prevention
• Enhances immune system function
• Assists in balancing hypoparathyroidism
• Potentially assists with joint pain
• Stimulates the formation of bone
• Accelerates healing of fractures
• Potentially assists with muscle soreness
• Increase muscle strength
• Aids in preventing Osteoarthritis
• Prevents Osteomalacia and Rickets
• Potentially relieves migraines
• Potentially assists with Multiple Sclerosis as well as other autoimmune disease
• Helps prevent tooth decay
• Facilitates calcium into your teeth
• Potentially relieves Psoriasis with topical application
• Stimulates the production of nerve growth factor
• Stimulates the production of insulin-like growth factor-1
• Increases absorption of calcium and phosphorus
• Improves the absorption of vitamin A
• Potentially lowers PSA levels

This is quite a list of benefits and I would suggest that we potentially have yet to scratch the surface of the multiple functional benefits to our body.

The RDA for vitamin D is now 400 to 700 IUs daily depending on age. Remember thought that the RDA is the minimum to ward off disease. The optimal daily allowance ODA is up closer to 1000 IUs daily. As a follower of Depke Wellness, I know that optimal health is your goal and therefore the ODA would be your goal.

Now that we can understand the benefits and recommended amounts, how can we be sure we are maintaining proper levels for optimal health and wellness? Let’s look at ways to address this.

My first suggestion is always to get out in the sun. Daily sun exposure is the preferred avenue for increasing vitamin D production in the body as well as so many other health benefits. Did you know that your body also uses cholesterol in the conversion of sunlight into vitamin D? I want to be clear though that you pay attention to your individual skin tone and do not over expose yourself to the sun. It is all about the correct balance. For someone that has very fair skin you may only need 10 minutes per day, while another with a dark complexion may need 30 to 40 minutes or more. It is also important to get this exposure during the peak times of 11:30AM to 1:30PM. Yes, I know that is when you have been told to stay out of the sun, but this is the best sunlight for vitamin D conversion. Remember also that you need to have total cholesterol at a minimum of 150 for this proper conversion also.

I know that most do not have the availability of daily sun exposure, so let’s look at alternatives.

From a nutritional perspective some of the higher dietary sources of vitamin D are listed below.

• Halibut oil
• Kippers
• Cod liver oil
• Mackerel
• Salmon
• Tuna
• Raw dairy
• Egg yolks
• Shrimp
• Liver

Most of the food sources do not provide the optimal levels for us individually so nutrionally, I always recommend cod liver oil. This has been used throughout our history as a significantly positive addition to the diet of most. Not only are you getting a quality source of vitamin D but also vitamin A and the ever important omega 3s that we discussed last week. When I lived back in the Chicago area, I took a krill supplement in the warmer months and cod liver oil in the cooler months. This was an incredible way for me to maintain yearlong vitamin D as well as omega 3 balance. The cod liver I recommend to my clients in cold weather climates is the Pure Cod Liver Oil. This is lemon flavor and in a liquid form to allow the highest level of absorption and assimilation. I only offer the lemon flavor to my clients. Funny, but once I purchased the non-flavored by mistake and it ended up in my dog’s food for the next month. To all those that consumed the non-flavored when they were younger, I give you a lot of credit. If you are using cod liver oil, it is recognized that 2 tablespoons per day with meals provided the ODA you're looking for.

From a supplement perspective, you could take vitamin D3 drops in a liquid form. If you are on the Krill-Plex which is the omega 3 supplement that I always recommend, and you do not want to stop taking krill through the year, you could simply add the Pure Vitamin D3 drops. This would also be the best option if taking oils in a liquid form are difficult for you. Cod liver oil is a great product but I get that it is not for everyone. All you need is one drop per day of the Pure Vitamin D3 to enhance your vitamin D needs. This is perfect for those winter months or for those that are not able to enjoy regular sun exposure. For most, that one drop per day is all that you would need.

Now you understand the importance of vitamin D and optimal health. Assess your individual needs and address this accordingly. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to respond with a post below and I will address this personally.

Barefoot Running…Challenge and Triumph

by Glen Depke

I wanted to share a personal story about a 29 year challenge that was overcome, when hope was not apparent. As you read this, look within yourself for the personal challenge that seems insurmountable for you to overcome and realize that your triumph is possibly just a moment away.

When I was 17, I hurt my knee playing football. Of course, I tried to get back in the game right away, but to no avail, I could not put any pressure on that right leg. Back in 1981 the only option was a completely invasive surgery and opening my knee for exploration and to potentially fix the problem. I chose not to do this and unfortunately, I had given up and also chose not to do any rehabilitation.

By the time I was 24 and living in a condo on the third floor, the pain was too much and I then looked at a new option to me which was arthroscopic surgery. The surgery was claimed a success and I agreed to rehab at this point.

Well, to make the long story short, I still had knee pain and when I would push myself on any level, my knee would instantly become inflamed and put me out of commission. One movement that would instantly put me down was running. I was resigned to the fact that I may not have hope for ever regaining my ability to move freely.

Move forward 21 more years to meeting Manny Aragon at The Rolf Workshop. Manny helped me work through the multiple soft tissue imbalances that I had created as an adaption to my original injury. He exposed me to the fact that my gate was completely off and even my bones had grown improperly as a part of this adaptation. I went through a series of sessions and had to learn how to walk again. Sounds funny but true.

Interesting to me at this point is that my gate was changing and my discomfort was significantly less. At this point I wanted more.

Somewhere in my conversations with Manny he mentioned the challenges potentially created by heal/toe running that we have been taught and shared stories of others with severe knee challenges that were able to run barefoot. Barefoot, are you crazy?

Well, here I am at 46 years old and just started barefoot running. I have only been doing this for a short time but I can tell you that for the first time in 29 years, I am running pain free and free of inflammation. I am not an expert in bare foot running and I am not going to say it is for everyone, but it is definitely for me.

I was resigned to a life of knee pain and inflammation but through persistence of always creating new questions, looking for new answers, exploring options and trying something new; I am looking forward to a life of FREE movement. Wow!

I first want to thank Manny Aragon for his assistance and I also want to supply you with an article that addresses the pros and cons of barefoot running. This is a decision for you and your health care provider to make together as a team.

The real reason I wanted to share this story though, is to understand that even when you have a personal challenge that seems insurmountable for you to overcome, realize that your triumph is possibly just a moment away. Remember to form new questions, find new answers, explore your options and try something new. Heck, even if it does not work at least you can check something else off your list.

Depke Wellness is all about new questions, answers, exploration and trying something new. If you would like to talk to me personally about our protocols, feel free to click here to register for a complimentary 20 minute phone or in office visit with me.

Air Purifying Plants

by Glen Depke

When I discuss the air we breathe I am generally talking about the importance of deep belly breathing and allow proper oxygen intake for the cells of your body. As you have heard me mention this many time before, this deep breathing is essential for you to thrive in your life and unfortunately most people live a life of short, shallow breaths which only allows for survival. To learn more about deep belly breathing click here to review a post from last year on this subject.

So today I want to talk a bit about the quality of the air we breathe. While it would be awesome if we could live on a pristine mountainside and breathe pure, fresh air; this is not real for most of us. Do to the poor quality air that we are exposed to on a regular basis, it is important to improve this in any way possible. I feel that the best way to create a shift in your air quality is to utilize air purifying plants. Below is a list of the best plants to assist in cleaning up the air you breathe.

• Areca Palm
• Lady Palm
• Bamboo Palm
• Rubber Plant
• Dracaena
• English Ivy
• Dwarf Date Palm
• Ficus Alii
• Boston Fern
• Peace Lily

Utilize these plants in the all the rooms of your house and office and put the most significant number in the rooms you spend your most time in, such as your bedroom, office and kitchen.

These will not only help improve your quality of air but also provide other positive stimulating factors for your life.

Best Source of Omega 3s?

Best Source of Omega 3s?
by Glen Depke

It is important to first understand the importance of proper omega 3 fatty acid intake. Not too long ago our ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 fatty acids was from 1:1 or 1:3. This was nearly a complete balance. In today's world we are lucky to reach a 1:20 or 1:40 ratio, and honestly it is killing us. It will never say on the death certificate "death by fatty acid imbalance" but this plays a significant role in your health and wellness.

Understanding that omega-3s are critical to optimal health and wellness dates back to 1923 when scientists discovered these essential fatty acids. It was recognized at that time that this was essential for us to survive and thrive. Always remembering that Depke Wellness is about thrival and not survival. Yes, I know that thrival is not a word but it is a very important part of my vocabulary.

As mentioned above, the omega 3 to 6 ratio has been declining over the past 100 years as our diets shifted toward grain-fed meats and refined foods.

You may still be asking, why is this so important? This is due to the fact that this imbalance may lead to a host of inflammatory related conditions such as dementia, cancers, hormone imbalance, cardiovascular disease and so much more.

Improved intake of omega 3s has been shown to reduce vascular, brain, endocrine, and metabolic disorders. This is also imperative for your child’s brain and eye development.

Even the American Heart Association urges people to eat fatty fish such as salmon at least twice per week and suggests that the consume at least 1000mgs of omega 3s daily. Even conventional knowledge is telling us to consume and supplement with omega 3s.

The two big questions are; are you getting enough omega 3s and what is the best way to reach this goal? If you are like most of our culture, you are omega 3 deficient. Here’s how you can help yourself.

Personally I take a supplement called Krill-Plex. Krill oil is the most bio-available source of omega 3s along with an added factor. It is also a very potent anti-oxidant. Due to the high amount of free radical activity and oxidative stress we are under on a consistent basis the added anti-oxidant is a definite plus. Remember though that the most significant impact is the ever so important omega 3s and the Krill-plex is the rock star of omega 3s. To order the Krill-Plex visit the Depke Wellness Store, where you will not only find this at a favorable price point but also shipping and handling is FREE from the Depke Wellness Store on-line.

From a nutritional perspective I would suggest cold water seafood such as wild caught salmon and grass-fed meats. In my opinion, the best company available to us today with the highest quality seafood that is wild caught and tested to rigid standards in regard to mercury and other toxicity is Vital Choice Wild Seafood. You can’t go wrong with the quality and the taste of this high of a quality of seafood is extraordinary! All this and it shows up at your front door. How awesome is that?

Grass-fed meat is also a strong source of omega 3s but only grass-fed. You can occasionally find grass-fed meat at your market but I have used a source that is 100% grass-fed all the time. Blackwing Quality Meats is the choice for me of top quality, organic, grass-fed meat delivered to your home.

Please, make sure you eat some high quality, cold water, wild caught seafood and grass-fed meats with some consistency and remember your daily Krill-Plex. They don’t call them essential fatty acids because they are optional.

Krill-Plex Supplement

Krill-plex is a unique source of omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and antioxidants; for menstrual comfort, heart health, joint support, cognitive function and skin health

Krill oil is unique in that it offers a naturally occurring complex of omega-3 and omega- 6 fatty acids, phospholipids and astaxanthin. This phospholipid-fatty acid molecule closely resembles that of human brain phospholipids, providing potential support for cognitive function The essential fatty acids in krill oil may also mediate hormone, prostaglandin, and neurotransmitter function to support menstruating women. A double blind, randomized clinical trial suggested that krill oil promoted physical and emotional well being during the menstrual cycles of women volunteers. Krill oil also provides an ideal essential fatty acid balance for healthy cardiovascular and platelet function. A prospective phase II randomized, double blind, clinical trial suggested that krill oil supports healthy lipid, triglyceride and glucose metabolism. A prospective controlled pilot clinical trial reported that krill oil supplementation helped promote joint flexibility and comfort. In addition, a randomized, controlled pre-clinical trial investigated the effects of krill oil on skin health and reported that it supports the body's natural defenses against the sun and environment.

Krill oil naturally contains a highly bioavailable essential fatty acidphospholipid complex and antioxidants, providing optimal support for menstrual comfort, cardiovascular function and cognitive, joint and skin health.

I would recommend ordering the 120 count bottle which will last you four months.

Is Cholesterol Killing You?

by Glen Depke

If you pay attention to most conventional doctors and mainstream thoughts on medicine, than yes, cholesterol is killing you. If you pay attention to the basic needs of the body, you will learn that cholesterol is always exactly as it should be.

I know what we have been told; if your total cholesterol is above 200 you need to get this down. If you cannot get it down on your own, you will need to take some form of stating to reduce your cholesterol.

Let’s first understand some of the basics about cholesterol. Most important is to get that cholesterol is produced in the body by the liver based on a determination of need by the body. When anyone tells us that our cholesterol is too high, they are telling us that the body does not know what to do. I don’t know about you but I know my body is smarter than my “taught” intelligence and the intelligence of any other human being. If we are doing something to artificially lower this we are potentially creating many other challenges in the body.

So what factors are substantial in regard to our liver producing cholesterol? Just a short list of some of the necessary roles of cholesterol is listed below:

• Cholesterol is a part of EVERY cell membrane in your body
• Cholesterol is a part of EVERY myelin sheath within your nervous system
• Cholesterol is one of the core components to producing hormones to maintain balanced health and wellness
• Cholesterol is very important in the conversion of sunlight into Vitamin D in your body
• Cholesterol also plays a role in manufacturing Vitamin A, E and K
• Cholesterol is a significant aspect of producing bile acids
• Protects against infectious disease

This short list shows the importance of proper cholesterol production to create health and wellness. Now if your cholesterol levels are being lower artificially, the question to ask yourself is, which of these many processes in my body are not happening and what is this costing me? The other question is what is potentially happening to your body if you are taking statins? Today millions of people all over the world are taking medicine that may create muscle weakness, bad memory, bad temper, impotency and painful legs, just to name a few of the potential side effects.

So what’s a person to do it they have high cholesterol? First of all, don’t put your main focus on the total cholesterol. The most significant factor is looking at the ratio of HDL and LDL. Notice I do not call them “good” or “bad” cholesterol because they are both necessary for health and wellness. It is preferred to find your HDL above 55 and your LDL not more than double your HDL. So let me give you an example of one of my clients. This man is a regular participant in triathlons so you can imagine the regular stress that is put on his body. He had a total cholesterol in the 270s which would have normally had him on statins immediately. When we looked at the HDL and LDL separate this told us a different story. His HDL was 95 and his LDL was about 165. This with his VLDL gave him the total in the 270s. Why were all these numbers so high? As I mentioned, his body is under a lot of stress and his liver manufactures this amount in order to keep balance. I not only suggested that his cholesterol was fine but I mentioned that due to the ratio, he had room for it to increase.

Obviously everyone reading this article is not a triathlete but I would guess that many reading this are also under a lot of physically and mental/emotional stress. If your cholesterol is high, it would make sense to me. A healthy liver will produce more cholesterol when you are in a healing crisis with the eventual goal of balance in the body. When the healing crisis is complete the cholesterol will lower on its own. I see it all the time.

So if your cholesterol is high, your HDL is low or your ratio is out of balance, it is time to look at what’s challenged in your body. Make some new choices and changes in your life, let your body complete the healing crisis and watch the cholesterol go down. To learn more about the overall changes needed to shift to health, visit Depke Wellness and click through the links provided for free health information to begin your journey to health and wellness.

Please feel free to post below with any questions or comments you may have to this article. This is a subject for an entire book but I wanted to expose some of the very basic understands for you.

Soothing Your Throat and More...

by Dawn Depke

Would you like a better alternative to gum and other breath fresheners
? Did you know that chewing gum wastes digestive enzymes? Since most of you are pretty health conscious I will assume you know that most of the sweeteners used in gum and other breath fresheners are artificial and, well, let’s just say “not so good for you.”

I myself am always looking for fun new health products that enhance my life. It wasn’t until the past year that I found one already sitting in my linen closet. There was a package of “Thieves Hard Throat Lozenges” sitting there, just waiting for me to use them. Since moving to California where the winters are so different than the cold, dry Midwest, I didn’t have a use for throat lozenges anymore. I don’t like to waist money or product, so I figured out an innovative use for these poor lonely throat lozenges, not to mention the fact that organic, therapeutic grade essential oils are one of my favorite natural remedies, I had to find a new use for them. They became my immune boosting; fresh breath, germ killing, throat soothing remedy for airplane flights, conferences and when I have to public speak. They taste good, they kill germs in my mouth so I find it a pleasant breath freshener and immune booster and they are really quite soothing to an even healthy throat.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils, let me share that they are highly concentrated amounts of the oil of certain plants, roots, trees, & flowers that have been scientifically proven to kill bacterial, virus, microbes, parasites, fungus, have anti-spasmodic & anti-tumoral, and many more effects on the human body. They smell amazing, and work in by inhaling them, rubbing them into the skin & ingesting them. If you remember back to my article “Rub-a dub, dub what’s in my Tub” you will recall all of the information I shared on why it is critically important to use organic, natural personal care products. Same goes for gun, breathe mints & throat lozenges. These conventional products are loaded with chemicals unless you buy them at a Natural Health food store or on-line with a reputable natural, organic company.

I think it is important and fun to share how they were awarded the name “Thieves”.

Thieves essential oil blend was created based on the historical tale of four thieves in France who protected themselves from the black plague with cloves, rosemary, and other aromatics while robbing victims of the killer disease. When captured, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their secret recipe. In modern days, these same herbs and essential oils have been found to be an effective barrier against topical and airborne microorganisms. The Thieves oil blend includes clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon, and Eucalyptus, and radiata and has been specially blended to offer the same kind of defense as it did in the fifteenth century. Thieves oil has been university tested and found to be highly effective in supporting the immune system and good health. (information provided by www.youngliving.com/ddepke Sue Chao, Craig J. Oberg, D. Gary Young, “Effect of a Diffused Essential Oil Blend on Bacterial Bioaerosols,” J. Essent. Oil Res. 10, 517-523 (Sep/Oct 1998).

I love that historical tale, but more importantly I love getting positive results from the products I take. If you suffer from sore throats, colds, bad breathe or know someone who does, please share this article with them. If you travel, public speak or just like something in your mouth, I’d suggest trying Young Living’s Thieves Hard Lozenges. (They come in chewable formula for the young and elderly as well). Please feel free to ask me any questions about this article at Dawn@DepkeWellness.com.

Where do I Find Wellness?

by Glen Depke

It is of utmost importance to recognize that you always find health and wellness within yourself and never externally. With this in mind, I can share that I have recognized some key patterns that lead to overall imbalances and symptoms of disease. These patterns that I will address are the recognized core challenges for at least 90% of dis-ease and the pain and suffering of symptoms.

The first place to look is within your fundamentals, yet this is the simple starting point that is so often overlooked. I like to compare building your health to building a house. When you are building a house you have fundamentals such as bricks, lumber, nails, roofing, ect. When you are building your health you also have fundamentals. These fundamentals are listed below in matter of importance but note that while they have a matter of importance but are also of equal importance, if that makes sense to you. When addressing these we are looking at providing your body with proper amounts of oxygen, water, nutrition correct for your bio-chemical individuality, proper restful sleep habits, adequate bodily movement on every level and regular exposure to the sun per your skin tone. The foundation of this house is built through your overall energy flow, which is so often blocked by negative emotions that are suppressed or expressed in an unhealthy way. To get further information on your fundamentals of health visit this link.

If any of the fundamentals of health are imbalanced for any length of time, the next area to be challenged is your adrenal glands. Once the adrenals are challenged for a length of time this will more than likely lead to issues within your gastrointestinal health. From there the body finds it difficult to detoxify with the eventual result of the pain and suffering of symptoms. This cycle then continues and unfortunately the symptoms challenges generally get worse; not better.

I don’t typically recommend addressing everything at once. This is generally too much for most people and honestly does not set up the body for proper healing. Always address the fundamentals first, followed by the adrenals. Based on my years of experience this is the best way to find your health. Once you balance these two areas, often you will find yourself back in balance. If you have not found your balance at that point then you know you need to look at the gastrointestinal tract and detoxification. Steps though…working in steps is so important. What’s the old saying, “Rome wasn’t built in a day?”

The reason why the adrenals are so important to address is due to the impact the adrenals have on your body.

Your adrenals have a direct effect functionally on the areas listed below.

* Endocrine System
* Metabolism of Fat and Protein
* Detoxification
* Immune System Function
* Inflammation
* Blood Sugar Balance
* Muscular/Skeletal Health
* Neural Connectivity

Often my clients can look at this list and pick out many areas that they already recognize as challenged. Don’t let time add to the list for you. Get your adrenal kit now.

Another important aspect of addressing adrenal exhaustion is to assess your adrenal function and utilize a protocol to allow your body to assist the adrenals back into balance. This has been a big part of my protocol all the way back to my days working alongside Dr. Mercola back in the Chicago area.
