2013 More Than Just Weight Loss Week 3

The beginning of week 3 is upon us. Two weeks down with many successes as well as some challenges. Let me start by letting everyone know that the supplements are the same in week 3 as in week 2. The only variance for this is for those that are detoxifying too quickly and this is creating uncomfortable symptoms. As mentioned in a previous post, if this is occurring for you, please stop the GI Synergy for one day and then add it back in at only one packet per day instead of two packets per day. After a 2 or 3 days on one packet, you can likely go back to two per day.

Per a recommendation of Louanna, I will be creating a new thread for each week moving forward to create an ease in moving through the posts. Thank you for that recommendation Louanna.

    1. Thank you, Glen! It's great hearing all the wonderful symptom improvements people are having on the program.

  2. My mom, dad and I were chatting tonight and we're finding it a bit odd that all three of us haven't lost any weight. We are pretty sure we aren't eating any of the foods to avoid...thoughts!?

    1. It is not unusual for some people to lose most of their weight toward the end of the program. It is odd that three are in one household though. I would focus on utilizing your Nutritional ID and eliminate the moderate to high glycemic foods or at least significantly reduce these.

  3. I haven't lost any weight either. UGH!

  4. I wanted to check in and see how those that were struggling with the GI protocol are progressing? For some, you may find that you can only take one packet of the GI Synergy every other day. We'll get you there.

  5. For me, it was a little hard to decipher which thing was making me feel bad, the flu buggie thing or the GI protocol. I followed your suggestion, though, of skipping one day. Added the GI Synergy back in tonight and haven't seemed to have a problem with it yet. Of course, I also made some yummy chicken soup with carrots, celery, garlic and leeks (totally on the program : ) And that made me feel pretty good too!

If I feel better in a few days, I guess I could up my GI Syn. back to twice a day, correct?

    1. Yes, but if there are challenges again, honor what your body is telling you and go back to one. Glad to hear that you are improving.

  6. I am feeling better today after a couple days off the GI supplements. Not all better, but much better.
Crashed and burned last night though after 3 days of toxic misery - ate a Chicken Tostada salad... spiced w/ avoidance spices, covered with cheese, black beans, corn, and some kind of spicy ranch dressing made from who-knows-what. I tried to make the above mentioned chicken soup for myself but it came out inedible, and that was the last straw for me.
I'm back at it this morning, though, GI supplements at 1/2 as per Glen's recommendation.

    1. Hey Louanna -- I should have probably given you more info on the chicken soup!! It was actually pretty tasty! I just didn't list all the ingredients (sorry if you thought it was just those things). I added several things to the soup - like olive oil, bay leafs, celery salt, coriander, salt and pepper. It's also a two-day project (mom's old recipe) so you probably had a super bland version. Ughh.. : ) Well, hope you're back on the plan. I actually starting losing some weight so please hang in there. Could be that it just takes us a little longer.

    2. Hi Jeanette! Sorry I didn't mean to say I was trying to use your recipe, I was just trying to make chicken soup, too, in general. :) Mine was a 2 day project, too, which is why I was SO disguested when it came out so gross. It was the way I'd roasted it, turns out, but thanks!

  7. Glen, for those of us having a hard time with the GI detox, what can we expect when the liver detox starts? And will it be of as much benefit if, under 1/2 GI protocol, there is still more GI detox left to be done when week 3 hits? And, should we continue the GI supplements into week three until they are gone, or quit them at that point?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The liver detox is typically easier. The supplements will be cycled up and down to ease your body into both the phase I and phase II liver detoxification. We of course will still pay attention to individuality. This is why I always do the program with video and blog support.

Yes, continue with any GI supplements into that part of the program.

    1. Number one use for this in our house is the warm morning drink and using this to make that drink into a shake for a treat. We also poor this over blueberries as well as poor over plantains fried in coconut oil, covered with cinnamon.

    2. Christine, one of our favourite recipes is curried shrimp and yams in coconut milk. Brown onions in olive oil, add curry powder. Then add cubed peeled yams and enough water to cover them. Cook until almost tender. Drain water, then add coconut milk (usually a whole can at least) - when it is warm, add shrimp. This is true comfort food! IN the old days, we would have it over rice, and sometimes thickened it a bit, but now we just eat is like a thick soup! Yum!

  10. To assist with weight loss be sure you are properly hydrated, which means one quart of water per day for every 50 pounds of weight loss. Also, either eliminate or dramatically reduce the caution or secondary foods from your Nutritional ID meal plan. One more tip, if you exercise, do this in the morning before you eat. This will eat away the fat.

    1. Would exercising before breakfast and in the morning apply to me also, considering my very specific adrenal needs?
      Thank you.

    2. Exercise before breakfast would still be recommended for you Diane.

  13. Happy Friday everyone!

I know that counting calories as long as we stay within the allowable lists and our personal ID is not the protocol, but could the fat from coconut butter, milk, spread and avocados and olive oil slow down weight loss? Sure is challenging to give up the portion & calorie control mentality right "LOL" Old habits die hard.........

    1. No worries with calories. The key to losing weight as tied solely into nutrition is insulin and not fat. When insulin is high, your body stores fat. When insulin is low, your body will release any fat not utilized by your body through the breath urine. This is a bio-chemical fact, not something I make up to make fat calories OK. We have all been domesticated to think that fat makes us fat.

    2. I agree that this is a hard paradigm shift and was wondering the same thing. It really makes you look at people's eating habits (including one's own) differently!

  15. Very exciting, next week we get to add some beans, some grains and green tea. While this normally is not a big deal, this may be exciting due to the restrictions to date.

    1. Its totally exciting!!! I think the hardest part of this is the food limitations - what we are eating is great, just a bit boring and repetitive!

      Delete
    2. The use of fat and allowable spices really helps with this. The other night we had burgers on the grill and topped with our homemade guacamole and used more spices that we typically would have. This along with a salad with mixed greens and some pear cut up, topped with olive oil and balsamic vinegar really did the trick. Sometimes even adding basil, oregano or other spices to the salad adds a little zing.

  16. A note to my Mixed and Protein Types. I want you to know that if you are not getting enough fat, this can actually hinder your ability to lose weight. Especially the Protein Types. I have had Protein Types in the past that had issues losing weight until they increased their fat consumption. I know, kind of messes with the mind, but true.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I am a protein type and have a hard time trying to figure out how much fat is enough fat. As you said, not enough fat can be hindering. I don't care for olive oil on steamed vegetables. Is there some way to gauge how much fat to have? I can understand 1/2 avocado, but when it comes to olives, or olive oil/vinegar dressing or coconut products I am at a total loss as to what is appropriate. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

    2. Hi Diane!
I'm a protein type too! I find that extra light olive oil with some sea salt works well on my veggies!

    3. It is fine to eat the fat on the meat, but I would not consider this as a significant factor in considering what other fat you eat. Remember that your fat quantity should be just slightly less than your protein intake by volume. So if you have a salmon filet about the size of a deck of cards, your fat volume that you are adding to this meal would be slightly less than the deck of a deck of cards. This could be a half and avocado, handful of olives or even a considerable amount of coconut flakes mixed with a bit of coconut milk.

    4. Hi Brenda, you got me thinking about the olive oil! I went to the store and found some dipping olive oil with herbs in it. It tasted better on the vegetables. I also found broccoli slaw at the store and it is my new favorite with avocado diced in it. I think i need to be a little more creative.

  18. Glen - I'm having a little problem. I'm not sure if it's the GI Synergy again. I stopped for a day, then started back at one a day for the last couple of days. Last night and this morning my pain came back in my right kidney. It feels worse than before and it felt like my body temperature fell (I felt really weird and everything felt ice cold.)

Also, I had actually lost about 8 pounds since we started (5 or 6 I lost when I stopped the GI Synergy) and now I gained back the 5 pounds today.

Main concern right now is the pain in my kidney area. I'm obviously going to stop the GI Synergy today just to see. But then what? I have 14 more packets and I'm a little afraid to start them again.

    Thanks : )

    1. Hi Jeanette,

What will be important is to find your personal tolerance for this. As an example, you may only be able to take one packet per week. I would suggest taking one packet every three days and see if that works for you.

      Delete
    2. Hey Glen - I have a question for you about this. After about 36 hrs of not taking GI Synergy anymore, my kidney pain has gone done significantly (just about 10-20% left) and I lost that 5 lbs I had just gained back. I had heard about wormwood and black walnut before and thought that if you had kidney problems you were not supposed to take them. (I'm sure you know more about this than I do though!! :)

Do you know which pill the wormwood and black walnut are in? (the beige, the brown or the yellow one??) Could I possibly just take the other pills that don't have these two things in them? I realize I will lose much of the power of the GI cleanse, but the kidney pain was pretty significant and I really don't want to take a chance on that happening again. But I'm definitely game to using all the other supplements in the packet (as I have used all of these at some point in the past with no serious problems).

      Your thoughts? (Thank you!!)

  19. Hi! This is the first time I have written on the blog, well, ever blogged. I've lost 5 pounds and my inflamation is getting better. I struggle with cooking at home and the time it takes. I am a protein type and would like to eat fruit after my meal, however, I've that you should eat fruit by itself or it spoils in your stomach. Is this true?
    Thanks for everyones sharing...

    1. My body asks for fruit at the end of a meal too and I have been wondering if this is okay or if this is still a sugar craving. A few nuts often fills this "need" too - would like to understand this better.

      Delete
  20. While I have of course heard this, I can honestly say that I have never seen this to be true empirically. The challenge with eating the fruit first, especially for the protein type, is the fact that this will increase oxidation and Protein Types are already in too fast of oxidation. Enjoy your small amounts of fruit at the end of the meal and always eat this with some added fat.

  22. Worst headache of my life last night. Just when I was making a 'comeback' from detoxing symptoms. I tried everything I could to treat HA naturally but after 6 hours I grabbed my migraine med that has caffeine in it. Hated to do that...but the headache finally went away.

    1. Yes, I've got a bit of a head cold myself. Not sure if its detox symptoms but sure seems like it could be either. Waiting for it to subside prior to restarting the GI Synergy.

  25. Glen - I have a question for you about the GI Synergy. (I am reposting, but updating my previous question a bit). It took me 3 days off the GI Synergy to get my kidney pain to subside. And I lost that 5 lbs I had just gained back while I was having the pain. The pain I had was scary! It hurt really bad and it felt similar to when I've had a kidney infection or a kidney stone. (I didn't this time, though - it had to be something in the supplements).

I have read that you aren't supposed to take wormwood and black walnut if you have kidney problems (which I do). So..do you know which of the three pills in the GI Synergy the wormwood and black walnut are in? (the beige, the brown or the yellow one??) Could I possibly just take the other pills that don't have these two things in them? I realize I will lose much of the power of the GI cleanse, but the kidney pain was pretty significant and I really don't want to take a chance on that happening again. I'm definitely game to using all the other supplements in the packet (as I have used all of these at some point in the past with no serious problems).

I'm nervous about even taking the wormwood or black walnut again given my level of pain. I was going to try once a week, but even that makes me nervous. Not afraid to try taking the other pills, though.

Can I still get some benefit without taking the wormwood/black walnut?

    1. Jeanette,

Due to the challenges with the kidneys, I would suggest that we work with the kidneys first for about 3 months and then reintroduce the GI Synergy at that time. We have to honor your individuality in this way. Taking these out of the GI Synergy, would make this so much less affective. I would recommend a slot on donation day this Saturday to address this. Please call Roberta at the office on Wednesday to get in the schedule. I do understand that you are in Chicago, but a phone consult will be fine.

    2. Got it.. I'll call Roberta tomorrow : ) Thanks!

  26. I had a good couple of days there off the GI routine. When I felt good I added GI Synergy back in, 1 packet per day, feeling lousy again today after 2 days. Big problem is the "lousy" effects my mood and I have trouble seeing past this to the goal.
Actually in fear of adding more detox tomorrow, but looking forward to beans in a big way.
Finally found that powdered magnesium moves the bowels, now I just have to take it twice per day - trying that today.
Finally writing off normal routine until March. Too much up and down... trying to adjust mentally for a longer haul.
Lost plenty of weight already (6 lbs as of a few days ago), although that's not at all what I'm in this for. Also, on a positive note, red bands at the tips of my fingernails are beginning to lighten and break up in spots. That is my biggest physical sign that healing is occurring despite how I feel otherwise. :)
